Endogenous Deficiency of Glutathione as the Most Likely Cause of Serious Manifestations and Death in COVID-19 Patients

The new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) continues to spread across the globe, affecting an increasing number of people and requiring the development of effective tools for disease prevention and treatment. The overwhelming majority of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 have an asymptomatic, mild or moderate course of the disease, and only 14% and 5% of patients develop a correspondingly severe or critical illness.

Higher rates of serious illness and death from COVID-19 infection in the elderly and those with comorbidities suggest that age- and disease-related biological processes make these individuals more sensitive to environmental stress and stress factors, including infectious agents such as coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. … ¹
